The University of Iowa is one of the nation's top public research universities with over 30,000 students, cutting-edge research facilities, a 705-bed hospital complex, and an ongoing commitment to sustainability. The University originally implemented the OSIsoft PI System in 2004 to help manage its on campus power plant. When an aggressive 10-year sustainability program was announced in 2010, the University decided to leverage its existing PI System infrastructure to help it reach its new sustainability goals.
Representing over 50 percent of energy production in Sweden, hydro power is the backbone of Sweden's energy system. With about 520 employees Vattenfall Hydro Power is the third largest hydro power provider in Europe. The utility manages 55 large-scale power plants and about 50 smaller-scale plants in Sweden and Finland with an annual production of 30-35 TWh and a capacity of about 8.300 MW. “We've been operating hydropower units for over 100 years,” noted Maintenance Development Engineer Magnus Holmbom in a presentation at OSIsoft's 2015 EMEA Users Conference.
Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS), a contractor for DOE, manages the Hanford Site Tank Farms, home of the largest volume of radioactive and chemical waste in the United States. The site is under close regulatory scrutiny and must comply with strict environmental regulations. To improve its reporting capabilities and compliance efforts, WRPS needed better visibility into operations across the facilities. It chose the OSIsoft PI System™ to upgrade and integrate its legacy systems into a central automated repository, resulting in more reliable data, easier access and reporting for better-informed decision making.
With the high-fidelity insights from the PI System, WHUD pinpointed a leak spilling nearly 147 million gallons a year, reduced its costs by over $1 million and postponed $15 to $20 million in upgrades.
